Very cool levitation images by Yowayowa - I love the colours in these, especially the last one mostly neutral with the bright pink from her backpack. I think some people could criticise them and say well there are no shadows in most of them therefore they are not very accurate but I don't think they are supposed to be hyper real, they are just an intriguing collection of experimental images. Just incase you've missed this. Have a listen to this catchy tune but Swedish Singer Lykke Li, this totally mesmerising video was directed by the fantastic Johan Söderberg. I totally love it, it's mind bending, no need to get your... kaleidoscope!

A few thoughts on interior decoration.

When it comes to interior decoration I enjoy an eclectic mix of styles and think colour is hugely significant. I think a neutral base is important but when it comes to the finishing touches cushions, accessories, throws and pictures - colour, texture, theme and shape can affect the mood of a home dramatically. Depending on what session it is, these things can be swapped around, for example warm woollen throws and snugly rugs can be brought out in winter.

When it comes to colour in my opinion colour it is to be enjoyed - and will ooze out of any house I ever live in. Bright floral cushions, stripy mugs, and hand painted table cloths with flags on. A bright lick of paint to an old piece of furniture can bring a sense of the joy of summer to an interior no matter what time of year it is.

William Morris said this… “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”… And I couldn’t agree more.

Has anyone else been watching Lily Allen From Riches to Rags on channel 4 (tuesday nights at 9pm - next week is the final episode)? It's about her leaving behind the music industry to set up a fashion shop with her older sister Sarah. The shop is called Lucy in Disguise and its on King Street, Covent Garden. They sell and rent designer clothing.

I love the classic Timex 80 watch, I always wear my gold Timex.

With what felt like our first proper day of Spring yesterday (FYI blue sky and flecks of sunlight at about 3pm in South London) - I thought it an approriate 'time' to say I love it when Timex release new colourway collections of their classic Timex 80 watch. It's not that I collect anything obsessively but if I did it would be these, imagine wearing a different coloured watch everyday, you could change it to suit your mood or outfit!

This reminds me of some very cool coloured headphones that Laurence picked up in the Danish Design Museum. Picture to follow when I find one.

Spring Summer brights

All the neon brights and block colours that are 'in vogue' at the moment are finally rubbing off on me. I went shopping briefly yesterday and came back with the brightest red top I've ever seen!! It's actually a really nice shade of red which looks even better on. Alright it is not quite this neon pink Matthew Williamson Coat...

... but it's a start right?! I figure I'm just going to ease the bright colours into my wardrobe gradually. Plus after a long winter of wearing so much grey, black, black/white stripes, I don't want my friends to have to start wearing sun glasses as soon as I enter the room, oh no no no. What do you think? Feed up of your winter wardrobe? I'm absolutely ready for some sunshine hues and summer dresses in mine now. Bring! It! On!

What is this I have read about Galliano being suspended from Dior? 40 minutes ago the Guardian online wrote this:

"Christian Dior has suspended its star British fashion designer John Galliano after he was arrested for an alleged assault and making antisemitic remarks after a late-night drinking session... Police took him to his home without filing any charges. He was released on the recommendation of the state prosecutor."

It looks like he there was no real harm done, so why have Dior gone to such extreme as to say he has been suspended? The mind boggles.

As it's Friday I'm working and getting inspired whilst chilling out to a bit of music.

I include a couple of chill out/ classical pieces.

I love Debussy - Clair De Lune particularly. I have a brilliant version on my iTunes by Bernard Herrman: London Philharmonic Orchestra but the only YouTube recording I could find by them is not particually great so I include this version which has a much better quality of recording by the London Symphony Orchestra.

If you have not heard this before I hope you enjoy it. It is a very relaxing and beautiful piece of piano music by Coeur De Pirate called Intermission. Happy Friday, have a great weekend.

Converse has just teamed up with the Finnish design house Marimekko on a new line of limited-edition trainers. These are two of my very favourite companies.

I would have Marimekko prints in my home and I wear Converse. Although I am not sure I would have the confidence needed to pull these off, they have some serious attitude. What do you think?... Maybe if worn with a very simple black or white shift dress and bare legs in the summer.

I think most people can relate to this heartfelt and honest album about her life post 'break-up' on some level.

somewhere to see cinema

After going to the cinema last night to see The Kings Speech, (which was brilliant, I have never been to the cinema before where literally everyone in the audience clapped as the credits rolled, it felt more like we had just watch some wonderful piece of theatre!) it has made me realise how many more films I want to see. The Black Swan looks a beautiful psychological master piece with an epic cast - I've not seen Winona Ryder in anything for ages. Ooooh and i still haven't managed to see Sofia Coppola's new film yet the list is growing.

We saw them at play at Latitude and left the arena feeling refreshed and chilled!!

PLEASE NOTE - I love this song!!!!! But I haven't seen the video before (until I am posting it for you now) - I have only watched the first 30seconds of it and it's annoying my already!!! Featured Artist # 9 Daisy Fletcher

The Large central Illustration was commissioned for the Dior Illustrated Rene Gruau exhibition (see last blog post). There were 5 new generation UK based Illustrators that were asked to do a piece of work that was inspired by Gruau (Erin Petson, Daisy Fletcher, Richard Kilroy, Sarah Arnett and Jasper Goodall). Each was given a theme from the exhibition to explore and work around.

"Daisy Fletcher draws on the friendship between Dior and Gruau and their shared vision. The feathers, flowers and textures convey a sense of luxury both men loved, whilst refering to the 'eternal Parisian woman' of their dreams."

Dior Illustrated: René Gruau and the Line of Beauty

I visited the René Gruau (1909-2004) exhibition at Somerset House – it finishes on the 9th of Jan (this Sunday I think?). I came out feeling inspired and in awe of his work. René Gruau is responsible for some of the most iconic fashion images of the 1940’s and 50’s and has created some of the most instantly recognisable advertising illustrations for Christian Dior.

The exhibition got me thinking about drawing, and how wonderfully expressive it can be! It’s made me want to draw more!!! So much of the freelance work I do is all done on the computer, which I love to do, but in a way it’s a shame really. Here I have put together a few of my favourite pieces of Rene’s work. I hope you find it as inspiring as I did!

Can sportswear be worn as daywear? I'd like to imagine it can be, if I owned any leggings as cool as some of these, I would team them will an oversized tee, belt and top knot (if only I had enough hair to make it look cool). Like this - Lykki Li - here pictured rocking a top knot, with a few stray hairs making it look whimsically chic. I love these LNA leggings (for some reason the LNA website is being incredibly slow - so I will post a link as soon as it starts working).

The Hotel Fox Experience

While I was in Copenhagen a few weeks ago I stayed in Hotel Fox for 2 nights, (as I said back in my July post about the hotel - Hotel Fox is a boutique hotel in Copenhagen with 61 rooms that 21 international artists have decorated, each one with a totally different theme - from graphic to minimalist styles). I stayed in Room: 208. Diamonds – The Crown Jewels, it was very relaxing and each wall was individually collaged with textured papers and drawings, above the bed was a giant yellow leopard with a gold chain coming out of the wall which attached to another picture to the right of the bed. It had a very interactive and fun approach to interior design.

Sadly though next spring the hotel is going to be redecorated as the hotel has been like it for about 5 years and as the longevity of the rooms is shorter (because each is individually decorated with intricate details that can easily break) than a standard hotel room (most hotel rooms should last about 8 years). So go while you can, make the most of it, apparently on Sundays they do a tour of all the rooms... "such fun!" Oh and be sure to try their yummy breakfasts!! Never before have I had a chicken, with apple chutney, lettuce and tomato brown rye bread sandwich before 9am!! Interesting but enjoyable, hope you enjoyed the round up.

Art on Globes ($399)

Wendy Gold has a degree in Industrial Arts, she first stared exploring using alternative canvases for decoupage in 2001. Her latest project ImagineNations uses vintage globes and recycled materials on the service to make beautiful new worlds, both real and imaginary. I have always loved the cross over between reality and fantasy.

If I could afford one of these I think my favourite would have to be the butterfly ‘flutter by globe’, at first glance it looks like – the muted colours and real land looking shapes could almost be from an old faded/ vintage map, but on closer inspection you see that it is beautiful clusters of butterflies in the shape of the real countries and oceanic sized spaces.

On another note - I have just started reading a new blog, http://www.keikolynn.com/. I love her vintage retro but girly style, (above image - i need a red coat in my life!). She also has her own clothing range Postlapsaria. Her boyfriend has a blog called this fellow - the fashion blogging world is predominantly a female lead one so it is always interesting to see a males perspective!!

Behind the scenes at Bridget Riley exhibition in The National Gallery

This is on till the 22 of May so you still have plenty of time to see it. Although the exhibition is relatively small (very small - only one room) I would definitely say it is worth a look - there is nothing quite like seeing great art face to face (plus it's free!!), it includes about 5 or 6 large scale paintings, some smaller interesting preliminary studies and a couple of works that have been painted directly onto the walls.

My 2 favourite works were the painting I often mistakenly call Wave but it is actually called Arrest (see photo in below post). And Composition with Circles which covers the largest wall in the Sunley Room at the gallery.

The white wall is flat and smooth, as if painting began with the wall itself, and the circles on it are almost perfect outlines, perhaps as broad as a woman's finger. My advise - go to gallery alone, spend time with each canvas, get lost in the works with your own thoughts and come out relaxed and inspired! Enjoy.

Bridget Riley

I am looking forward to seeing the new Bridget Riley exhibition this weekend (which has been timed to coincide with her 80th Birthday) at the National Gallery (24 Nov - 22 May). I have always been fascinated by her work but not yet had the opportunity to see it in the flesh, her work has offended been likened to listening to a piece of music or even like reading a musical score - tempo, rhythm, shape and colour are all words that do come to mind when looking her work, and I imagine this is only emphasised even more when viewing it in real life. I shall report back on how it is next week.. have a nice weekend!

Hi! Sorry for my lack of blogging in the last few days. As I am sure most of you know Emma (my friend and flatmate) and I were visiting my sister and her fiance in Copenhagen, Denmark last week. I am pleased to be back on familiar London turf but sad to say good bye (or Hi Hi as the Danes would say) to my first ever glimpse at a beautiful Scandinavian country. Photos – city by day, boat on the Nyhavn, the city by night.

A couple of cool boutiques we spotted in the ‘vesterbro’ area of Copenhagen – traditionally known for being the red light district of the city but has now become quite a trendy area –with a mix of jazz cafes, fashion boutiques and second hand shops it is a bit like east London / the Shoreditch of CPN. Shops Kyoto, Designer Tom Rossau, Asfalt and the Dansk Manufakium.

With 40 acts, 5 rooms over 3 floors – music, spoken word, theatre, film, dance, workshops and food! only £15 it is A-MAZING!!! The lady behind OneTaste Dannii is an absolute gem, and you must must must go!!!!! Take lots of photos and be inspired!!

Anthropologie

My featured artist this week is the lifestyle store Anthropologie – so yes ok… it’s not an artist per se - the store features so many individual pieces of contemporary ‘design art’ though I wanted to mention how much I love love looove it, and how lucky us londoners are to now have 2 Anthropologie stores (all the way from the states!!)

Zoe is a Illustrator and Graphic designer, working on projects from animation to brochure and layout design, she uses a mix of hand drawing and computer aided design in her work - Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Indesign. I adore her project aimed at London Zoo, where she designed the layout for their annual report, each page is a different beautiful collage with her own photographs of different animals associated with the zoo.

On Saturday night we were lucky enough to see Morcheeba play live at Camden’s Roundhouse, before I say anything about Morcheeba, may I just say - what a great venue!! God knows how they built that thing (apparently it was renovated in about 2004) but hats off to the architects that did it.

I guess they haven’t had much new stuff for ages because before I went to see them, the main songs of I could think of … were ‘The Sea’ and ‘World Looking in’ ohhhh and ‘Rome wasn’t Built in a Day, tracks that evoke - very hippy-esc vibes, weed smoking, dreadlocks and lots of slow swaying. I am trilled to say that their new album is absolutely fantastic, it’s still got the same gorgeous minimal amount of production but it’s so not so hippy - shhh * * it's actually very sexy!! * *

Morcheeba - I Am The Spring

Blimey that girl can sing!!!! This song is nice!!! They are all beautiful... My advise? Go buy the album.

Terry Frost

Not a contemporary artist this week but an important one to me. I always find it interesting that Terry Frost didn't become an artist until his late 30s, as he served in the Army for years and it was during this time he met Adrian Heath (a painter) whilst he was a prisoner of war, then subsequently, he attended Camberwell School of Art and the St. Ives School of Art! I love his paintings because they are bold and strong but with tentative touches, I also love the fact that he then brought us his son - Anthony Frost - another talented and influential artist - born in Cornwall too!!! love it!!

Over the last 18 months I have worked freelance for Hazel Orleans from the innovative womenswear brand Eki Orleans. Hazel is really fun to work with, I translate her strong ideas into functional and repeating print designs, using Illustrator and a bit of hand painting (I don't do the garment design). All the prints you see here are done by me and have rooted inspiration from traditional West African patterns. Hazel has a great colour pallete - that I exaggerate and develop into what you see here. Eki Orleans has had a great first season these images are from the various catwalk shows they have been in, including Camer Couture and 'Untold' at London Fashion Week.

I was in 2 minds as to whether to post these images because the print design style is so different to my other work on this website/ from the Tempest Apparel t-shirt collection. But I love patten and design in all shapes and sizes (and from all cultures and inspirations) and enjoy designing for all sorts of people too. Go Eki Orleans!

As you probably guessed by now, I have a bit of a soft spot for a collage or two (as I was telling mon flatmate last night I also have an uncontrollable addiction to buying lipstick that I never actually wear. Last month it was neon nail varnish, this month it is blush pink and nude lipstick - but that is beside the point)... and seeing as these images are so dame wonderful, I thought it would be rude not to share them.

3D folded paper + scanned tweed fabric + knitted geometric jumpers + cubism + jigsaw looking faces = success!!

This show from Marc by Marc Jacobs is from last year - I still find it very lovely. It includes some of my favorite colour mixes and I love this eclectic mix of 'best of the vintage store' Aztec chunky Knits and African prints. The playful mix of stripes also reminds me of this blog entry by What Katie Wore (She probably won't appreciate me linking to this image of her as it was taken on a day she was ill, but do check out some of her other crazy outfits if you get time)
